Autumn colour comes to these mountains in relay. Koyasan first. Then Muroji. Then the gorges closer to home.
October in Koyasan: the ancient cryptomeria don't change colour, but the maples growing between them do. Against the stone lanterns and moss-covered grave markers of Oku-no-In, the colours arrive slowly — orange, then deep red, then gone. Further in, at the bend of a mountain river, Muroji's five-storey pagoda stands in its cedar forest as the surrounding maples begin to turn. The colours here peak a little later than Koyasan. We drive through both in a single day.

Dinner at the old sake brewery on Shinmachi-dori. Gojo ingredients, one drink to begin.
A short walk from yoinn leads to GOJO GIROCCO — a dining space inside a converted sake brewery. Beneath the old exposed beams, the course begins with one drink: a cocktail made from local Gojo fruit, or a glass of local sake. Something about that first glass marks the shift from afternoon to evening.
